Vets4Pets are proud to support the Pet blood bank charity.

Vets4Pets Harrogate Veterinary Surgeon Leigh-Anne Brown

Ever wondered what would happen if your dog needed a blood transfusion?

Probably not, because maybe you didn’t know that dogs can donate blood too!

Many of our practices regularly hold pet blood donor days. These are charitable blood drives just like the kind humans attend. The Pet Blood Bank is a charity which collects blood from generous volunteer canine donors and supply it to vets across the UK to ensure there is blood available if they need to perform a lifesaving blood transfusion for another dog.

As well as being able to brag to all their doggie friends about being a hero, each donor is provided with a full haematology and biochemistry profile.

To become a donor your dog should:

  • have a good temperament

  • be aged between one and eight years old,

  • weigh more than 25 kilos

  • should not have travelled abroad

  • should be up-to-date on all vaccinations

  • should be fit and healthy

If you think your dog could be a lifesaver, then please contact your local Vets4Pets practice or the Pet Blood Bank to see when is the next pet blood donor day near you.
